ENVIRONMENT
Natural resources represent the basis for economic, cultural, and social rights of the vast majority of the world’s citizens. Building upon the civil society work and grassroots initiatives it has supported in the past, EWMI has created an environment program designed to work with local citizens to find sustainable and community-based solutions to urban and natural environmental protection issues. Responsible environmental management in urban and natural settings is critical to sustainable development. Urban rehabilitation addresses the poor quality of a community’s environment while also addressing the social and economic needs of the community. The preservation of forests and areas rich in biodiversity positively impacts the livelihoods and welfare of indigenous communities and helps ensure food security for the greater region. EWMI takes a participatory and pro-poor approach to local environmental protection and provides capacity-building programs, technical assistance, and funding to support network-building and grassroots advocacy initiatives at the local, national, and regional levels. In doing so, EWMI promotes and motivates more responsible environmental management and creates lasting networks of community advocates.
