ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT : SURINAME
COMPETITIVENESS ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM IN SURINAME (2009 – 2010)

The East-West Management Institute (EWMI) was awarded a fixed-price sub-contract by Economic Transformations Group, Inc. to assist in developing a competitiveness enhancement program for Suriname. Challenges facing Suriname include the need for industrial diversification beyond key natural resource sectors, employment generation in the private sector, and improving the general business environment and investment attractiveness in which the country ranks poorly according to World Bank and other international benchmarks. The project supported government, business and community leaders in their efforts to form a collaborative action plan and take collective actions that would enhance the international competitiveness and sustainability of the key economic sectors in Surinam. EWMI provided an in-depth analysis of Suriname’s competitiveness, and a prioritized implementation agenda for business environment and institutional reform.
